For some reason 78 rpms of early Joe Loss are extremely rare which is surprising considering the great sound the band had. To make this CD we are indebted to collectors Mike Thomas and Charles Hippisley-Cox for sharing part of their collections with us. Vocalists are Jimmy Mesene, who has not been re-issue a great deal and the unknown Harry Case who nevertheless acquits himself well. Some excellent dance music we are sure you will like.

In late 1939, to help keep up the morale of the various armed services during the Second World War, the Entertainments National Service Association (ENSA) was created. It provided entertainment covering everything from serious acting to music. This CD contains material recorded by ENSA for the troops. Unlike many war time “non-commercial” recordings, the sound quality on these discs is excellent. This CD contains 80 or so minutes of some great music from the wartime airwaves by some rather talented bands, singers and instrumentalists.

A grand selection of the hotter and more rhythmic sides from Ray Noble demonstrating that the orchestra could play jazz when it wanted to and that Al Bowlly could handle this kind of number really well. One of the best “feel good” releases of vintage music.

This is probably the most novel CD we have issued as it is not centered around an artist, band or type of music but around London which, judging by some of the lyrics, was in the 1930s the centre of the universe. However, unlike places in the USA, there are relatively few songs about London from the golden age, i.e. 1920s, 1930s and the 1940s. However, we did find some splendid recordings and they are presented here. They embrace romance, comedy, jazz, and more. A unique CD

The 1950 film Dance Hall features the bands of Geraldo and Ted Heath, and all the music comes from their repertoire, impeccably recorded and imaginatively filmed. The director was Charles Chilton who cleverly combines the romantic stories with scenes of 1950s social realism, played out in and around the dance floor. The score includes Goodnight, Sweetheart interpreted by Geraldo as a snazzy quickstep, a soupy vocal You’re Only Dreaming sung by Hy Hazell, and a New Years Eve celebration where the two bands combine in raucous versions of Tavern in the Town and Little Brown Jug.

This is a new film compiled and produced by Tony Staveacre that incorporates recorded interviews with Al Bowlly's friends and fellow-musicians, parts of which were included in the 1975 TV programme Impressions of Al Bowlly. In 1974, Tony Staveacre tracked down Roy Fox, Ray Noble, Nat Gonella, Tiny Winters, Sid Colin, Joyce (widow of Lew) Stone, Joe Crossman, and invited them to share their memories of the great singer. They talk with affection and good humour about the Al that they knew and loved. They tell the whole story, there’s no need for a narrator. With photos and music, the film runs for 32 minutes.
